I have been studying at Luther College, USA since 2021 with a major in Economics and Data Science. Receiving not one but two awards in Economics was one of my biggest academic achievements at Luther. Faculty members of the Department of Economics, Accounting and Management selected me to receive the 2024-2025 Schultz Family Scholarship in recognition of my outstanding achievements in economics. Additionally, they recommended me to be nominated for Omicron Delta Epsilon (ODE), the international honor society in economics for my high scholastic achievement in the field. With this nomination, I will graduate with honors in economics in 2025 from Luther College.
Looking back, I must admit that receiving these prestigious awards was beyond my imagination. I remember I took my first economics class when I was in 9th grade in my village at Shree Janavikash Secondary School in Sindhupalchok. Initially, it was hard to understand the economic concept but as I studied further, economics became my favorite subject. However, considering the financial status of my family, I never thought I would be able to continue my study further to take my interest in economics to the next level.
I was fortunate enough to be one of Samaanta’s 6th Cohort Fellows in 2018. The fellowship helped me continue my higher education in Kathmandu where I had the chance to continue my study. Furthermore, I got an opportunity to attend the United World College (UWC) Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina to pursue my higher education. Economics was one of the courses I took there before I graduated in 2020. In 2021 I got a full scholarship to come to Luther College and I decided to major in Economics and Data Science. Ever since I have broadened my knowledge of economics from simple concepts of demand and supply to more complex concepts such as inflation, interest rates, unemployment, income inequality, economic development, and more. I truly enjoy learning how economics can influence or impact day to day decision-making of firms, individuals or government. I am looking forward to my graduation so that I can apply my skills and knowledge to solve real world problems.
My achievement is just an example of how someone from a small government school in a small village can achieve so much given the right opportunities and guidance. I would like to thank Samaanta Foundation for being there to provide immense support for my journey. I know there are a lot of students in small villages who are just one opportunity away from making their dreams come true and making a difference in the society they live in. I hope Samaanta continues to bring more and more students and provide the opportunity they deserve.
